Highfields on Tour
School Trip to Aachen – 27 Nov to 1 Dec
Mr. Kirk lead our visit to the fascinating city of Aachen in Germany. Forty-one students accompanied by four staff travelled overnight to this ancient city which is at the crossroads of Europe. We began our visit with a walking tour of the city which took us back in time to the early years of the city, founded by the Romans, who were drawn there by the hot springs. We learnt that up to 1656 buildings in the town were constructed in wood but a fire started by a careless baker reduced the city to ashes. The baker was banished and subsequently all buildings had to be made of stone. Did the baker go to London and have a similar accident ten years later?
On Saturday we headed to the mountains of the Eifel National Park for a visit to the beautiful town of Monchau. With its medieval center, half-timbered houses and narrow cobblestone streets it was the perfect backdrop to a very popular Christmas market. Later that day we returned to Aachen and students were able to explore the main market as darkness fell. A truly enchanting sight.
The visit to the cathedral, built by Charlemagne was a highlight. We were able to access areas normally out of bounds to get closer views of the Charlemagne’s golden sepulchre and the imperial throne which was used in the coronation of thirty German kings.
Next stop: Madrid!
