09.05.2013 - Health Day

On Friday 26th April, our Year 10 students participated in our annual Health Day. Below is a small glimpse of the day, as told by one of our students.

"Health Day was a fun day that allowed us to try new activities such as yoga, pilates, and trampolining. We liked trampolining as it was fun, and we learnt that yoga was really healthy for you. It relaxes you, ands makes you feel happy.

We were given a lot of good advice on how to stay healthy and we tried new food and drinks. We collected leaflets and stickers throughout the day. The talk on breast cancer was interesting and raised awareness that anyone can suffer from cancer. We also learned how to check for cancer, and where to get help.

The health day was a good reward for the end of our exams. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the day."

07.05.2013 - Textile Students create display for Ashley Hay Folk Festival

Enthusiastic textile students from years 9 and 10 at Highfields School have created a display themed “Creatures of the Forest” as a backdrop in the refreshments marquee of the Ashley Hay Folk Festival during May 4th and 5th bank holiday weekend.

Using different techniques such as felting, embroidery and appliqué, these eleven students, who have been working on their creations since Christmas at a weekly after school club, came up with a variety of creations for the display, including a tree, owl, wolf’s head, hedgehogs, squirrels, toadstools, a snail, fairies, and even a peacock’s tail.

The club has been so successful they have started to sell their creations, with any profits being used to buy materials for the club. Tie dye T-shirts, key rings, and purses made from recycled fabric are all available to buy from the students.

Mary MacDonald, who runs the club, said, “I can’t praise these students enough. Their enthusiasm, talent and enterprising attitude make our club so enjoyable and it is wonderful to see their work displayed at this folk festival where members of the public will be able to enjoy it too. They are a fantastic bunch of young people and I love working with them!  And the club couldn’t run without the help of our art textile A level student, Hannah Watson!”
